How to play Impostor Game

Impostor Game is a word party game for one shared phone. Most players know a secret word. The impostor has to blend in without knowing it. This page follows the same flow as the app.

Set the table

Sit so that one person can hold the phone without the others reading over a shoulder. Add every name. You need at least three. Names need two characters, and you can remove the last name you added.

Choose one category. Then set the impostor count and the timer. The game suggests 1 impostor for 3–6 players, 2 for 7–9, and 3 for 10 or more. You can raise or lower that number before the round starts. The timer can be 1 to 5 minutes, or off. The usual length is 2 minutes.

Pass the phone

Players take the phone one by one. Hold the button to see your role. Regular players all see the same word. The impostor sees that they are the impostor and does not see the word.

Let go before you hand the phone over. The word disappears, and the screen names the next player. If you let go too fast, use “check again” before you pass it. When the last player is done, the discussion can start.

Give hints

A random player who knows the word starts. Say something related to the word without saying the word itself. The in-app example uses PARK: trees, green, relax, and walk are useful hints. Car, computer, and phone are not.

Listen for someone who stays vague, copies other people, or drifts off the topic. Impostors are trying to sound sure while they figure out the word from your clues.

Vote once

Anyone can open the vote during the discussion. If the timer is on, it pauses. When time runs out, the vote opens on its own. Pick one player and confirm.

The full rules explain who wins. When you want another round with the same people, play again. You can also change category or clear the names and start over.
